The Oxford Dictionaries API gives you access to our world-renowned dictionary data in an ever-growing list of languages. Based on our intensive language research programme – one of the largest in the world – our data is up-to-date, accurate, and reliable and, for the first time, can be quickly and easily incorporated into your apps via one single API.

With the Oxford Dictionaries API, you can access:

• Flexible endpoints including headwords, parts of speech, synonyms, audio, example sentences, and more.
• Data expertly pre-processed by our in-house engineers to ensure accuracy and consistency of format across datasets – in many languages, for the first time.
• Continually updated content, giving you immediate access to the latest words and linguistic resources.
• Datasets in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Hindi, isiZulu, Latvian, and more.

The Oxford Dictionaries API is the gateway to our innovative new lexical engine and platform (LEAP) where our dictionary data is optimized and semantically linked. All translations are linked at sense level, so if you’re looking for the Spanish equivalent of ‘bow’, we’ll make sure you get the sense you need (whether that be ‘a decorative tied ribbon’, ’a way of greeting someone with respect’, or ’the front end of a ship’). This semantic linking also allows you to easily cross reference lexical information, opening up endless possibilities of how you can use the data, from simple word lookups and vocabulary quizzes to natural language processing and artificial intelligence.

Word frequency data is available through the integrated LexiStats API. While the main Oxford Dictionaries API gives you the words themselves, LexiStats gives you information about a word and its context: how often it is used, how often its variations are used, and the words it is used with. It offers data from one of the largest English language corpora in the world to help you develop your NLP programmes, create your own language models, or enhance your word games.
