Developers Respond to COVID-19

The past few weeks have been challenging and uncertain. As the coronavirus situation continues to evolve, we are proud of our developer community — and the projects they have come up with to help track and understand COVID-19.

We wanted to share how developers have responded to this crisis, and display some of the great projects we have seen so far. We also encourage you to reach out and share if you have been working on any projects related to the COVID-19 outbreak.

High Interest in COVID-19 Data From Software Developers

Developers around the world have expressed increasing interest in coronavirus/COVID-19 APIs. The chart below shows the increasing trend of searches for these APIs since the beginning of March. Searches included in this count include “coronavirus API,” “COVID-19 API,” and other possible variations (like “corona virus API” or “API covid”).

The trend line for coronavirus/COVID-19 APIs closely resembles the trend line for new subscriptions to these APIs on RapidAPI.

The interest from developers in COVID-19 APIs is also significant enough that it made a measurable impact on RapidAPI’s organic traffic. There is a measurable increase from approximately March 8th onward (marked by the red line), which coincides with the increases in coronavirus/COVID-19 API searches and subscriptions.

Usually, weekends are marked by a decrease in organic traffic. Since interest in COVID-19 APIs began, there is a clear increase in organic traffic to RapidAPI that occurs on weekends. You can see this in the chart above, where the troughs of the wavelike pattern are much higher after the dotted red line.

We have also seen this trend in increased weekend activity extend to our new account signups. The total number of daily signups has increased, and the weekend dip has almost completely flattened as seen below.

The previous charts show clear evidence that developers are interested in coronavirus/COVID-19 data. We have observed a noticeable increase in the number of active applications powered by RapidAPI that coincides with the increasing interest in COVID-19 APIs.

This suggests developers are actually creating applications that use these APIs — not just searching or browsing for them.

New COVID-19 Data APIs

Developers are searching for coronavirus/COVID-19 APIs, and they are also creating and publishing them. At the time of posting, there are currently 11 coronavirus/COVID-19 APIs that have been added to RapidAPI by our community.

Note that RapidAPI can not guarantee the accuracy of these APIs. However, all three APIs featured below claim to be relaying information from reputable sources, including Johns Hopkins University (one of the most trusted sources of COVID-19 data).

The four COVID-19 APIs we chose to feature below are all also completely free to use.

1. COVID-19 Coronavirus Statistics API [Free]

This API uses publicly available data about current confirmed cases, deaths, and recoveries of the COVID-19 virus compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Data returned includes confirmed cases, deaths, recoveries, and last reporting data. This data is filterable by country.

2. COVID-19 API [Free]

This API allows you to follow the progress of the coronavirus around the world. Data returned includes the number of new, active, critical, recovered, and total cases by country. You can also get historical COVID-19 data filtered by country.

3. Coronavirus Monitor API [Free]

This API provides real-time information about the coronavirus from Worldometer, CDC.gov, and Johns Hopkins University. This API gives you flexibility on what is returned, you can filter by country, see global statistics, or historical trends. The API also includes an endpoint with mask usage instructions.

3. Insights Quotient COVID-19 API [Free]

This API allows you to query the underlying multidimensional models UST Global’s Data Engineering team has developed.

Tutorials Using Coronavirus/COVID-19 APIs

We are also excited to see a number of tutorials created by developers using the coronavirus/COVID-19 APIs available on RapidAPI. Here are a few that we have seen so far.

1. Make a COVID-19 Tracker in JavaScript using RapidAPI

This tutorial by Doctor Code walks through the basic steps of making a COVID-19 dashboard using the Coronavirus Monitor API on RapidAPI. The tutorial shows you how to retrieve data using the API, and display it on a customizable web page.

2. Use React to Create a Coronavirus Map

This tutorial by Thian Lopex Zambrano shows how to create a map to display coronavirus/COVID-19 data using the Coronavirus Monitor API on RapidAPI.

3. ScriptRunner: How to Get the Latest Corona Statistics

This tutorial shows you how to stay up to date and filter COVID-19 statistics by country and region, using ScriptRunner and RapidAPI.

4. COVID-19 Dashboards, Maps, Visualizations, Projects, Data & You

A collection of various dashboards, maps, and other projects currently available, plus some advice on how to create your own COVID-19 project and where to find data.

Interesting Coronavirus/COVID-19 Projects Built with RapidAPI

A number of developers have created interesting and informative projects using APIs on RapidAPI. We wanted to share some of them here, and encourage you to share any projects you might be working on.

1. COVID-19 Dashboard

This dashboard shows an updating count of COVID-19 cases and details per country and worldwide.

2. COVID-19 Tracker App

This mobile app shows an updating count of cases and other details.

3. Signalpattern COVID-19 Collection

This dashboard from Signalpattern collects data from multiple sources and displays it in one dashboard.

4. COVID-19 LWC Dashboard

This dashboard was built in Salesforce by Raghu Sanivarapu and features a map and searchable data by country.

5. COVID-19 Stats Table

This table shows COVID-19 stats filtered by Country, State (US), State (Australia), Province (Canada), or Province (China). Data in the table includes confirmed cases, deaths, recoveries, fatality rate, recovery rate, and more.

Final Thoughts

Thank you to everyone in our community who has listed APIs, created tutorials, or shared projects relating to the coronavirus/COVID-19. We will continue to add to this post and welcome contributions from our community. Feel free to share what you have been working on by tagging us on Twitter or Facebook, or emailing us at support@rapidapi.com.

Again, we are humbled to see how proactive the developer community has been in response to this crisis and hope you are all staying safe, healthy, and informed.

  • COVID-19 virus in the past months has become a household name, has all the social media, radio stations and Television Shows and broadcasting is all about COVID-19 Virus. I am currently doing research on the updates of this virus in the world and it leads me to your blog. I must say your write-ups are so lovely and great.

  • Hello to all

    • Hi Lukasz,

Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment!

We appreciate your hard work on the EndlessMedical API and the support of COVID-19 tracking.

      Keep up the great work!

  • I am very grateful for the wonder full work done here. Well done to the RAPID API team and those that have created quite accurate COVID-19 API,s .
I used one of the verified API's here (2nd one on this post) to create an android application. But at the moment Google Play Store is only publishing applications that have been published or approved by a Government agency or a Health organisation Organisation. At the moment If you search on play store in my location (Nigeria), for "covid", "covid-19", "corona virus" or any related term, only three applications would come out. I submitted my app to Play Store any way and also to amazon app store. At the moment amazon app store has rejected the app and play store is still reviewing it.
Any Ideas on how I can get my app out there ?

  • Hi guys,

I'm looking for an API focused on travel restrictions for the post-COVID era travellers. I understand than majority of your APIs are focused on medical issues and some of them are focused on mask use but... there is an API that brings you information about travel restrictions per country (even by airport) and special conditions for travelling?
