What’s New at RapidAPI – Added Features and Updates [September 2019]

By Team RapidAPI // September 14, 2020

We are excited to share the most recent updates we have made to RapidAPI. This month’s highlights include the addition of new code snippet libraries, rate limits, and support for custom student pricing plans. As always, please let us know if you have any questions about the changes.

New Code Snippet Libraries

Update: We have officially added support for even more code snippet libraries! You can now instantly copy code snippets for Python 3, Go, Swift and more. These code snippets allow you to easily integrate APIs into your application.

Where to Find It: The new code snippet libraries are located in the same place as before, in the code snippet drop-down on the API endpoints page. Simply select the language drop-down and pick your preferred language to display the snippet

API Rate Limits

Update: We also launched the ability to include a general rate limit for an API pricing plan. This follows last month’s update that enabled hard rate limiting. This addition will help protect an API (and developers utilizing an API) from making too many requests too quickly.

Where to Find It: If an API pricing plan includes a rate limit, it will now be displayed on the API pricing page.

As an API Provider, you can add a rate limit to your API pricing plan by navigating to Definition > the Plans and Pricing tab. Under the Public Plans heading, click the edit button. From there, you are able to change pricing information and enable rate limiting.

RapidAPI School / Student Pricing Plans

Update: RapidAPI is in the process of launching our brand new student program called RapidAPI School, just in time for the new school year!

Initially, RapidAPI School will include a selection of free or discounted pricing plans just for students. As the program continues to grow, RapidAPI will introduce other perks, more APIs, and resources to help expose students to APIs during their education.

Where to Find It:

As a Student: If you are currently enrolled at an accredited college or university and would be interested in being an early member of RapidAPI School, join the waitlist now.

As an API Provider: If you are interested in being a part of the program, you can get started today in 2 simple steps!

    1. Create the CUSTOM-STUDENT pricing plan for your API. [I’ll provide a step by step guide on how to do this below, plus some recommendations on pricing models]
    2. Email community@rapidapi.com to let us know you would like to be a part of the program.

Providers can add a student pricing plan by navigating to the RapidAPI Provider Dashboard and selecting the Plans and Pricing tab of your API.

Scroll to the bottom of the page to the Private Plans section and select +Add Private Plan

Create a new subscription called CUSTOM-STUDENT that includes your desired pricing plan.

Recommended Pricing Model:

We recommend utilizing a free pricing plan, with a hard rate limit on the number of requests/billing objects allowed. This will ensure the student won’t accidentally incur a large overage fee and get charged a lot for their usage.

For the number of requests/objects you allow within the plan, we recommend providing something in between the BASIC and PRO pricing plans, or a free version of the PRO plan.

If you have any further questions regarding pricing for students, email us at community@rapidapi.com!

Feedback

We would love to hear your thoughts on these new updates, or what you think we should work on next! Let us know via email or Twitter.

You can also check out last month’s product update if you missed it.
