IMDB id (the “tt000000000” bit of a movies url on imdb.com) is often used by other APIs as a canonical unique id refering to the movie or tv show. It’s useful for linking between different APIs to ensure you are talking about the exact same movie (e.g. trakt.tv), and also for getting the IMDB rating.

For example, searching for King Kong in IMDB:

  • King Kong (1976) tt0074751
  • King Kong (2005) tt0360717
  • King Kong (1933) tt0024216
  • etc, etc

See http://www.imdb.com/find?q=king kong&s=tt&ref_=fn_al_tt_mr

Searching “King Kong” on utelly only returns the 2005 movie, but this is only confirmed by actually following the links to the URLs at the various sources returned. Searching for “King Kong 1933” still returns the 2005 movie.

It would be great to also have the Year returned in the response to confirm which movie is being returned, and ideally to have the IMDB ID returned directly too (as per trakt.tv) to be absolutely certain I’m looking at the same movie (sometimes specifying both name & year is still not unique, particularly when it comes to shorts)

And to extend the search parameters to be able to search by IMDB ID and to optionally filter by year when using a search term (e.g. ?term=King Kong&year=1933)
