Hi,

Thanks for your API, but I get an issue…

For Baltimore (Maryland), I get about 12 tides per day. How is it possible?

Plus, on every others websites there is the normal 4 tides a day (example: https://marineweather.net/tide/baltimore-fort-mchenry-md-tides)

I've got the same problem for many locations: Odda (Norway), Holbaek (Denmark), Kiel (Germany), Stockholm (Sweden)...

I hope you can fix this issue (or explain me more if it is not an issue :))

Best regards,

Tony

Hi Vojta,

I just want to let you know that tides are still not good in Stockholm, even with the new model on marea.ooo :

https://marea.ooo/en/59.3251172/18.0710935?model=eot20

=> Do you think you can improve this ?

Elsewhere in sweden, as I can see, the datas are not perfect with the new model but lot better than the current model.

=> When do you plan to release the new model on the API?

Best regards,

Tony

Hi Tony,

I reviewed posted coordinates and it seems that the API do not perform well it the posted locations.

Right now API is using the global tide model which was derived using the various tide gauge data together with satellite altimetry. The global model do not perform the same in all places. It depends for example on the input data for the particular location, complexity of the coastline, how deep the ocean/sea is etc (the more complex coastline and shallower water, the worse).

Bad news is that the only way for me right now to fix the issue is to add more data sources for the locations where the model is not performing well. The slightly better news is that I’m currently finishing new API version which should be out (hopefully) during the following month(s). The new API version adds new global model and thousands stations around the world.

For Baltimore you can see the results from the new API via marea.ooo website

For the current model
https://marea.ooo/en/39.2903848/-76.6121893

For new model
https://marea.ooo/en/39.2903848/-76.6121893?model=eot20

For the forecast from the Baltimore station

https://marea.ooo/en/39.2903848/-76.6121893?station_radius=10

The forecast from the station should be more or less the same as the one from NOAA

https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/noaatidepredictions.html?id=8574680&units=metric&bdate=20220330&edate=20220401&timezone=GMT&clock=24hour&datum=MSL&interval=hilo&action=dailychart

For Stockholm

Current model
https://marea.ooo/en/59.3251172/18.0710935

New model
https://marea.ooo/en/59.3251172/18.0710935?model=eot20

For station
https://marea.ooo/en/59.3251172/18.0710935?station_radius=10

For other location you posted you can check the result of new model by adding model=eot20 URI parameter to the marea.ooo if it performs better (in my experience it is better in the “inland locations” and locations with more complex coastline). Unfortunatelly the new API will not provide the station predictions for these locations. But after the release I’ll be focusing to add more data sources (especially in Europe).

If you want to be notified about the new API version, please let me know at api@marea.ooo

Have a great day
Vojta
