I’ve wanted to add this to my project as well and looked into it, before scrapping the feature entirely. The options I can remember I found were:

• Grabbing headshots/pictures from Wikipedia media using their API (Free I think)
• Finding and using a GettyImages API (they have headshots of multiple sports and an API) (Not sure on cost)
• Paying a large sum to SportsData.io to use their Headshots API ($5000 per year, per league. I asked)
