I would like to use this API for my A-Level computer science project at college, if I subscribe to the plan, why would I have to enter credit card details even though it is a free plan? Would I get charged after using it for an amount of time?

Sorry for the late reply. That is due to mashapes policies. You have to have a credit card on file with them (nothing we can do about that). That would only be charged for overuse.
