The retries on failure are almost definitely what is slowing it down but there’s a max number of retries so when it continues to fail it will give up and return no response. I will work on trying to make this endpoint more robust. But I’ve exhausted the more basic tweaks that don’t require a full re-write so this change will take a bit. In the mean time, sending your requests a bit slower is likely to help.
